4 Farmland & Railway Green Corridor

The footpath north of the A25 crosses open farmland with the occasional oak tree. Sheep often graze here so be careful not to disturb them.

The footpath intersects the railway ‘green corridor’- the tree and shrub lined railway embankment which stretches almost continuously from Buckland to Dorking. This is an important structural feature that connects woodlands and hedgerows in the northern part of the 4Bs. It supports the movement of bird, plant and insect populations. The larger trees include ash and species of oak while smaller trees and shrubs include hazel, hawthorn and buddliea.

After crossing the railway footbridge the path traverses a large (35 acre) arable field which is rich in flints and fragments of chalk washed down from the hills of the North Downs. It is important to keep to the path as there is often a crop of barely. If you are lucky you might spot a buzzard or red kite flying overhead or hear skylarks in the summer.
